Shopify's launch note for Canvas lists three things it does not support yet besides theme app extensions: Rollouts, Markets and Translations. If you sell into more than one country, two of those words are the ones you care about, and the sentence is shorter than it should be. Here is what each one covers, from Shopify's own Canvas documentation, and what it means for a store using GeoBeacon or any geolocation app.

"Markets" here means per-market theme customisation

Shopify Markets does several jobs: regional pricing, local currencies, domains or subfolders per market, and the ability to customise theme content per market from the theme editor. Canvas is a theme editor, and the limitation Shopify describes is the last item. You cannot yet tailor a Canvas theme's content for one market and show different content to another.

The rest of Markets is configured in Settings > Markets, outside any theme editor, and Shopify's Canvas pages do not describe a change to it. Your markets, their currencies and their domains are not what that sentence is about.

"Translations" means translating inside Canvas

Same pattern. Shopify's page says you can't translate a theme directly in Canvas yet. It does not say how translations managed elsewhere behave on a Canvas theme, so if you depend on them, test a translated page on a Canvas copy before you publish one.

What geolocation needs from the theme

GeoBeacon does two things. It reads your Shopify Markets to know which market or regional store a country maps to, and it runs a small script on the storefront that either shows a "Shopping from Canada?" card or redirects, depending on the mode you chose. The first part is Admin API, unrelated to themes. The second part is a theme app embed, switched on in the theme editor.

That second part is what Canvas blocks today. You can't add or configure app embeds in Canvas, so on a Canvas-badged theme the GeoBeacon embed cannot be turned on. The rules still evaluate; there is just no storefront script to act on them. Shopify's note to developers says it expects to support theme app extensions before Canvas becomes the default editor, with no app changes needed.

The practical layout for an international store today

  • Live theme without the Canvas badge, embed on. This is the setup every GeoBeacon merchant has today, and it keeps working.
  • Experiment in Canvas on a copy made with Duplicate in Canvas. The original is untouched.
  • If you rely on per-market content differences or in-editor translations, hold off on publishing the Canvas theme. The docs say those are not there yet.
  • Do not expect the redirect to protect a Canvas theme you publish early. A shopper from Canada landing on your US theme sees the US theme.

Why this matters more for geolocation than for most apps

A gallery that is missing is visible. A redirect that is missing is silent. You see your store working fine from your own country and never notice that visitors elsewhere are not being routed. Check Online Store > Themes for the badge on the live theme, and use the no-VPN testing guide to confirm the card or redirect fires on the published theme.

GeoBeacon's own note on Canvas, with the Themes-page walkthrough, is on the GeoBeacon site.

Questions we expect

Does Shopify Canvas support Shopify Markets?

Not per-market theme customisation, which is what Shopify's Canvas documentation refers to. Markets themselves are configured in Settings > Markets, outside any theme editor, and Shopify's Canvas pages do not describe a change to them.

Does GeoBeacon work on a Shopify Canvas theme?

The rules and the Markets data they read work as before. The storefront card or redirect is a theme app embed, which Canvas cannot enable yet, so it needs a theme without the Canvas badge for now.

Do I need to change GeoBeacon when Canvas adds app embed support?

No. Shopify has said apps built on theme app extensions will not need changes. Enable the embed in Canvas once Shopify makes app embeds available there.
