Shopify's launch email to developers listed what Canvas changes for apps. It comes down to two things: app blocks and app embeds can't be added to a Canvas theme yet, and themes edited in Canvas don't appear when an app lists a store's themes. Everything else is unchanged.
That gives you a test you can run on every app in your store in about a minute, with no developer involved.
The test
Open the app and ask two questions.
Does it put anything on the storefront? If the app's setup ever sent you to the theme editor to turn on an "app embed" or add a block to a page, it depends on theme app extensions. On a Canvas-badged theme that step is unavailable until Shopify adds support, which Shopify says it expects to do before Canvas becomes the default editor.
Does it ask you to pick a theme? Apps that install code into a theme, publish themes or back them up list your themes through Shopify's API. Canvas themes don't appear in that list yet, so the app won't see them.
If the answer to both is no, Canvas is not going to change anything about that app. Most inventory, order, shipping, accounting and POS apps are in this group. Canvas is an editor for the online store, and apps that live in the admin never see the theme.
Why Restock Ops passes
Restock Ops is a purchasing and receiving layer for small retailers who sell through Shopify POS: purchase orders with partial receiving, supplier records and notes, cost history, barcode labels printed from a receipt, barcode-scanned stocktakes and reorder suggestions. All of it happens in the Shopify admin. It writes received quantities and unit costs to Shopify inventory through the Admin API, shows you every write before it happens, and records it so it can be undone.
There is no block, no embed and no theme anywhere in that. We did not skip storefront features for Canvas's sake; a purchase order has no business on a product page. The result is that a store that moves its online storefront to Canvas tomorrow keeps receiving stock, printing labels and counting shelves exactly as before, with Shopify still the source of truth for quantities.
Our other four apps, for comparison
Since we build five apps, we ran the test on all of them.
- Snug Gallery: the gallery block is affected; the galleries themselves are store data and are not.
- Beacon Messenger: the chat button is affected; WhatsApp order and shipping notifications are not.
- SafeSale: discounts and price rewrites are not affected; the optional badge and countdown are.
- GeoBeacon: the storefront embed is affected; the rules and Markets data are not.
- Restock Ops: not affected.
None of the five lists themes, so the second question is a no for all of them. Each affected app now says so, in the app, next to the button that would otherwise do nothing.
What to do with the results
If an app you depend on fails the first question and you want to use Canvas, keep your live theme off Canvas and design in a copy made with Duplicate in Canvas. If every app passes, there is nothing to plan for, and Canvas comes down to whether you like what Sidekick builds.
If you run a POS store and the online storefront is the smaller part of your business, this is probably the least consequential Shopify announcement of the year for you. Shopify's Canvas documentation has the full list of what Canvas does and does not support if you want to check our reading of it.
Questions we expect
Does Shopify Canvas affect inventory or POS apps?
No. Canvas is an editor for the online store theme. Apps that work in the Shopify admin and never add anything to the theme are not touched by it.
Does Restock Ops work on stores using a Canvas theme?
Yes. Restock Ops has no theme app extension and does not list themes. Purchase orders, receiving, labels and stocktakes run in the admin and write to Shopify inventory through the Admin API, regardless of which theme is published.
How do I know if a Shopify app is affected by Canvas?
Ask two questions. Did the app's setup ever send you to the theme editor to turn on an app embed or add a block? Does the app ask you to pick a theme? If both answers are no, Canvas changes nothing for that app.
